5G Technology in Flight is Now an Attainable Reality

In a move towards the digital future of flight, Airlines will soon offer passengers cutting-edge 5G technology on board their aircrafts. In line with this goal, the Commission has updated its definition of spectrum allocation for mobile services aboard planes – allowing current and upcoming generations alike to remain connected during their journey at altitudes.

Passengers in the EU now have greater capabilities, allowing them to use their mobile phones at all of its features and capacities- an experience comparable to being connected through a 5G network.

“5G will enable innovative services for people and growth opportunities for European companies. The sky is no longer a limit when it comes to possibilities offered by super-fast, high-capacity connectivity,”

Commissioner of the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, proclaimed.

As of 2008, the EU Commission has reserved specific radio frequencies for airlines to provide passengers with high speed services such as messaging, phone calls and data. This recent action will further bolster those efforts by facilitating wider deployment of 5G technology onboard aircrafts across Europe.

Passengers no longer have to be disconnected from the world while flying. With an onboard pico-cell, they can now make calls, send texts and access data during flight – all thanks to a satellite network happily connecting them with ground mobile networks!

The Commission has opened the door to a world of innovation in the automotive industry, with amendments granting access to 5GHz frequency bands for Wi-Fi use aboard road vehicles. This important step could enable Metaverse applications and push forward various innovative technologies within cars and buses up until June 2023.
