“Biden-Harris Administration Prioritizes Cybersecurity for Household IoT Devices,”
ANNOUNCES NATIONAL LABELING PROGRAM
In October 2022, leaders from companies, schools, and government met with the White House to work on a program that will label internet safety for connected devices. The government wants to make sure IoT devices like baby monitors or smart home appliances are safe from cyber threats. The program will tell people if the devices are safe and make companies and sellers make sure their devices are safer.
People talked about making a plan to make sure devices that connect to the internet are safe to use. They talked about putting special labels on devices to help people know if they are safe or not. They also talked about how important it is to have a plan that people can trust. This is important because more and more devices connect to the internet. This plan builds on work that has been done before by companies and a government group called NIST. The President also wants to make sure internet devices are safe and has asked NIST to work with another government group to make it happen.
Some big companies and groups that make and sell internet-connected products talked with the government. They will work together to make something happen. Some of the companies and groups that were there were Amazon, AT&T, Cisco, Comcast, Consumer Reports, Google, Intel, LG, Samsung, Sony, and others. Also, some government groups like the National Security Council and the Department of Commerce were there. A senator named Angus King spoke first.
After talking , the White House plans to make a program that will label internet safety for products. They will start using it in the spring of 2023.
